Halloween With Fluffy

Halloween With Fluffy

As Halloween approaches, seasonal decorations are popping up in stores and on houses all over town. This is certainly a very special time of year, but it can be dangerous for our feline pals. Read on as a Flint, MI vet discusses Halloween with kitties.

Candles can definitely give your home a warm, welcoming glow, but they are very dangerous for kitties. It’s much too easy for a furball to accidentally stick her tail too close to a flame! Keep candles and potpourri burners in high, secure places. If you use a fireplace or space heater, use a gate or grate to kittyproof it, so your cat can’t get too close.

Halloween is unfortunately a very dangerous time for cats, especially black ones. Not only is Fluffy at risk of being stolen or injured, increased traffic is also an issue. Keep your feline pal indoors for a few weeks around the fall holiday. Also, be sure to keep candy, candy wrappers, and decorative items well out of paws’ reach. Better safe than sorry!

As the weather cools, your pet will exchange her summer wardrobe for a winter coat. You may find your clothes and furniture more or less plastered with cat fur during this process. Brushing Fluffy daily will help, as that dead fur will be trapped in a brush before it gets stuck to everything. To get pet fur off your furniture, try using a damp sponge, a squeegee, or rubber dish gloves. We also recommend keeping a few lint rollers handy.

Autumn Dangers

In fall, many people prepare their lawns and gardens for winter by adding pesticides, herbicides, and other products. This is also a popular time of year for people to fill their cars with antifreeze. These chemicals are all very, very toxic to kitties! Fluffy could get sick just by walking through a recently treated patch, and then grooming herself. Wild animals, poisonous plants and mushrooms, and mold are also dangerous. To play it safe, keep your furry pal safe and sound indoors.

Keeping Kitty Cozy

Did you know that cats sleep even more than usual in cold, dreary weather? Offer Fluffy lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in. Your furball may also appreciate a heated bed.
