Does Your Dog Have Allergies?

Does Your Dog Have Allergies?

Has your dog been sneezing a lot lately? Does Fido seem to be constantly fighting the itchies? If so, your pup may have allergies. Just like people, dogs can have allergic reactions to a variety of things. Read on as a Flushing, MI vet discusses allergies in dogs.

Signs of Allergies

As mentioned above, sneezing and itchiness can both be signs of allergies in dogs. Some other common symptoms include red, runny eyes; snoring; burping; and flatulence. Allergies can cause various skin problems in our canine friends, including fur loss, hot spots, and crusty or scaly skin. Stubborn ear infections can also be caused by allergies. More serious symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizure, coma, or, in rare cases, death. If you know or suspect Fido may have allergies, contact your vet immediately.

Common Allergens

Fido can be allergic to many of the same things as people can. Mold, mildew, pollen, leaves, trees, and dust are a few common culprits. Your pup could also be allergic to insect bites, or something in his food or doggy shampoo. Some dogs also react to strong vapors, such as perfumes or cigarette smoke.

Veterinary Care

Allergies can’t be cured, but they are treatable. Your vet will need to determine exactly what Fido is reacting to before offering treatment options, however, so some tests may be needed. If food allergies are suspected, your pup may need to go on a special diet to help determine what he is allergic to. Ask your vet for more information.

Home Care

While getting your pet proper veterinary care is first and foremost, there are some things you can do for your furry buddy at home. Vacuuming and dusting your home regularly is one of the best things you can do. We also recommend investing in a good air purifier, and washing Fido’s bedding weekly, using hot water and unscented detergent. These things will also keep your home looking and smelling good, so this is a win-win solution! It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on pollen counts. When levels are high, limit your dog’s outdoor time, and wipe your furry pal’s paws and belly with a damp cloth when you bring him in.
