Doggy Paw Care 101

Doggy Paw Care 101

Does your dog jump to greet you when you come home? Does he enjoy running after his favorite toy? These are some of Fido’s cutest habits . . . and he couldn’t do them without his paws. In fact, your pet’s paws are crucial to his overall health and well-being! Taking care of Fido’s furry feet isn’t difficult, but it is very important. Read on as a Flushing, MI vet offers some great doggy paw care tips.

Be sure to keep your dog’s nails trimmed. Overgrown nails can cause Fido a lot of problems! Long nails are not only very uncomfortable, they also make it hard for your pup to get traction on slippery surfaces. They can also cause him to adjust his gait, which can aggravate or contribute to painful bone/joint problems, such as arthritis.

Summer and winter can both wreak havoc on your pet’s feet. In summer, Fido can burn his paws by walking on hot surfaces. In winter, snow, ice, salt, sand, and chemical de-icing agents can all give your pup painful abrasions. If your dog will wear booties, then put them on him when the weather is bad. If your pooch won’t go for fancy footwear, wipe his paws down with a damp cloth daily. Use paw balm or paw wax to protect and moisturize those furry feet. We also recommend choosing pet-friendly de-icing products. Check your local pet store.

Paw Inspections

Check your canine buddy’s paws regularly. You’ll want to look for warning signs, such as heat or swelling, and also watch for cuts. Keep an eye out for ticks as well: these disgusting hitchhikers sometimes latch on to Fido’s toes. If your furry pal gets a light scratch, you can treat it with antiseptic, but contact your vet for anything more serious than that. You definitely don’t want to take chances with the possibility of your dog developing a paw infection!

Paw Fur

If your dog has tufts of fur between his toes, clip these back, so they don’t get gunky and matted. While you’re at it, try giving your pet a gentle paw massage, or teach him a cute trick, like Gimme Paw.
