Winter Care for Cats

Winter Care for Cats

As you’ve probably noticed, Michigan winters can be quite brutal. While your feline friend may already have a fur coat on, she’ll still need some extra TLC when it’s cold out. In this article, a Flushing, MI vet offers tips on keeping Fluffy happy, healthy and purring during the cold season.

Keep Fluffy Indoors

Cats are always safer inside, and this is especially true in winter. If Fluffy goes outdoors, she faces several serious risks, such as snow and cold; chemicals; cars; and other animals. She could also become trapped somewhere during a storm! We recommend keeping your furball indoors. If you do let your kitty out, bring her in at night and whenever bad weather is approaching. Watch for signs of frostbite, especially on your cat’s ears and tail. Shiny skin is one common symptom.

Household Hazards

Heating elements and fireplaces can be very dangerous for kitties! Make sure to use protective grates so that Fluffy can’t singe her fur. You’ll also want to be careful with candles: burn them in high, secure spots your feline friend can’t get to.

Chemicals

Antifreeze is a major danger for kitties in winter. It’s extremely toxic to cats, but unfortunately, has a taste many of our feline friends find appealing. Mop up any spills right away, and cover damp stains with sand or litter.

Comfy Cat

Kitties love nothing more than snuggling into a cozy spot for a nap, especially when it’s chilly out. Make sure Fluffy has plenty of warm, soft places to settle down in. Settling in with a good book or movie, a hot beverage, and a purring cat is a great way to spend a cold winter night!

Diet

As noted above, we advise keeping your furry pal indoors in winter. If you do let Fluffy outside, she may need some extra calories, as she’ll burn more calories than usual in cold weather, just trying to stay warm. Kitties with health issues, such as arthritis, may benefit from supplements. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Facilities

No one likes a chilly bathroom! Cellars and entryways are often popular places for litterboxes. Just be sure Fluffy’s powder room isn’t in a room that gets very cold.
